Class Community
The environment of my classroom is relatively positive and productive. The students are pretty comfortable with each other and have no issue speaking out in class. They participate pretty well though sometimes they need more prompting. The students are comfortable working together in whatever group they are placed in. There are very few behavioral issues and when we do have some they are very minor and easy to manage. We have 33 students in a very small room so we are all very close to each other which creates an intimate atmosphere. Half of my students are pretty motivated to making good grades by finishing their work and doing well on tests. The other half basically just wants a passing grade to move on to the next class. There are no stories that stand out to me about my class but they are pretty typical teenagers.

This sounds like a nice class to have!

ReplyDeleteAs your mentoring teacher would say, 'you're in a closet'. I would say that being so intimate has worked out to be good for your class. It is nice that they work so well together in groups, no matter who they are grouped with (this is the same with my class. lucky us!).
ReplyDeleteDo you think that the class is so well behaved because the students make it so or because your teacher has that great of classroom management skill? Or both?
ReplyDeleteSo, this class runs smoothly, no huge issues, just some typical hiccups along the way. Caitlin has a good question. Do you think it is the students in the class or what you and mentor teacher are doing/have done?
ReplyDeleteI'm amazed that you keep 33 students paying attention without having to kick students out of the room. Have they had a class with the other students in the room? This could explain how they are so well-behaved and know each other well.
ReplyDeleteDo you think sitting so close together hurts their learning or helps it?
ReplyDeleteI think it is partly the fact that these are pretty good students but it is also how we set up our rules. Also, because we are in such a small room, we can get a students attention easily even in the back of the room. The students are very talkative with each other because they know everyone so well so sometimes that is an issue but overall they behave pretty well. We do struggle with getting around because the desks are so close together and it is hard to change the seats around.
